Feature: April Book Haul!

This is very belated as I’ve been so busy with blog tours and exams, but here’s a round up of the books I got last month!

1. The Strain – Guillermo del Toro
2. Shadow Study – Maria V. Snyder
3. The Skull Throne – Peter V. Brett
4. Wasp – Ian Garbutt
5. Lord of Ashes – Richard Ford

The Strain7106333

“A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.”

I am a big fan of Guillermo del Toro, I’ve seen the majority of his movies and Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my all time favourites. So why it has taken me so long to read this I have absolutely no idea. I recently bulk watched the television adaptation and absolutely loved it. Seriously, it’s so dark and disturbing. If you haven’t watched it yet I definitely recommend it! So when I saw this in a second hand bookshop for fifty pence I jumped at the chance to get it. Here’s hoping it’s as dark and creepy as Guillermo’s movies!

“Once, only her own life hung in the balance…

When Yelena was a poison taster, her life was simpler. She survived to become a vital part of the balance of power between rival countries Ixia and Sitia.

Now she uses her magic to keep the peace in both lands—and protect her relationship with Valek.

Suddenly, though, dissent is rising. And Valek’s job—and his life—are in danger.”

YELENA AND VALEK ARE BACK. When it was announced Maria V. Snyder was returning to Ixia and the storyline would feature Yelena and Valek I could have jumped up and down in happiness. Maria V. Snyder is one of my favourite authors and The Study series is absolutely fantastic. I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of the book from Gizimomo’s Book Shelf (go check out her fabulous reviews and giveaways) and as soon as I’m finished university I am going to lock myself away to find out exactly what happens to my favourite poison taster.

The Skull Throne24516043

“The Skull Throne of Krasia stands empty.

Built from the skulls of fallen generals and demon princes, it is a seat of honour and ancient, powerful magic, keeping the demon corelings at bay. From atop the throne, Ahmann Jardir was meant to conquer the known world, forging its isolated peoples into a unified army to rise up and end the demon war once and for all.

But Arlen Bales, the Warded Man, stood against this course, challenging Jardir to a duel he could not in honour refuse. Rather than risk defeat, Arlen cast them both from a precipice, leaving the world without a saviour, and opening a struggle for succession that threatens to tear the Free Cities of Thesa apart.

In the south, Inevera, Jardir’s first wife, must find a way to keep their sons from killing each other and plunging their people into civil war as they strive for glory enough to make a claim on the throne.

All the while, the corelings have been growing stronger, and without Arlen and Jardir there may be none strong enough to stop them. Only Renna Bales may know more about the fate of the missing men, but she, too, has disappeared. . . .”

Book number four in the Demon Cycle has arrived! The eagerly anticipated Skull Throne was released at the end of March and has been a big talking point online. I love this series and am really looking forward to finding out what happens next. Peter V. Brett also did a signing in my local Waterstone’s so I was lucky enough to a shiny signed copy. The book is a massive one – like seven hundred pages, so I think this one will take me a while to get through!

“For a gentleman seeking more prestigious company amidst the seedy bawdy houses of an eighteenth-century city, the House of Masques provides the perfect no-touch escorts. Girls, highly educated and socially trained, are geisha-like status symbols for politicians, bankers and minor royalty. But these girls are the condemned, the exiled and the abandoned, who are given new identities to service the needs of the House. Among them is the Abbess, the white-haired proprietor, the Fixer, a disgraced surgeon, and Kingfisher, an African tribesman now a slave. Into this world comes Bethany Harris, a disgraced governess who has been rescued from a madhouse and transformed into the Masque, Wasp. She soon discovers that everyone in the House has a past, and personal horrors, coupled with dark ambition, are leading to a crisis that not only threatens to destroy the House of Masques and everyone in it, but reaches to the heart of government and the throne itself.”

This book was a completely random choice for me. I was in Blackwell’s – my absolute favourite bookshop, and it was sitting on recommended by the staff list. Immediately I was drawn in by the cover and the title: “Wasp, Or, a very sweet power.” After reading the synopsis I was hooked, and I definitely think this one will be keeping me up after bedtime, it sounds so intriguing, I’m already desperate to know more!

Lord of Ashes23525468

FIGHT TO THE DEATH…

The queen of Steelhaven has grown in strength. Taking up her dead father’s sword, she must defend the city from the dread warlord Amon Tugha and his blood-thirsty army now at the gates. A vicious, unrelenting four-day battle ensues, the most perilous yet.

…OR BOW TO THE ENEMY.

No side is immune from danger as all hell breaks loose, with the threat of coups and the unleashing of the deadliest and darkest magick. Loyalty, strength and cunning will be put to test in the quest for victory. What fate awaits the free states?”

I received this book through BookBridgr from Hardline. It sounds fantastic and I really can’t wait to read it. Dark and bloody. It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to sink my teeth into a big epic fantasy, so I’m looking forward to getting to grips with this. Blood thirsty armies? Check. dark magick? Check. Battles and a kick ass queen? Check. Definitely going to love this one.

That about does the books I got last month. What books have you been buying? Have you read any of these? If you have what did you think!? Let me know in the comments!
