What would you do when the fate of an entire country rests on your shoulders?
Nelay never wanted to be queen. Poised to become the most powerful priestess in Idara, Nelay doesn’t have time to become a pretty bauble for the king. She’s too busy saving her people from the invading army sweeping across her kingdom. But in defeat after defeat, Nelay begins to realize a bigger power is at play than that wielded by mere mortals. Only she can stand between the cinders of her once-great nation and the vengeance of a goddess.
Welcome to my stop on the Summer Queen blog tour, run by the wonderful Rockstar Book Tours. I’m a big fan of Amber Argyle, her Witch Song series if fantastic (you can check it out here.) This series is possibly even more fantastic than Witch Song, it has everything you could possibly need: magic, action, adventure, romance and lots more in between. This is the second book in the series, the sequel to Winter Queen, though it does feature a new set of characters. It’s intense, exciting and an absolute pleasure to read.
This book is pretty much unputdownable. As soon as I finished Winter Queen I jumped straight into this one, I loved it so much. Nelay is such a great character, she’s brave and strong and always stands up for what she believes in. There’s plenty of character depth and expansion going on within the novel, and a really great mix of supporting characters. They all feel very real and life like. Sometimes with a big mix of characters they can feel one dimension, but that’s definitely not the case with Summer Queen. I really liked Jezzel, but she does not feature a whole lot in the story, perhaps in book three we’ll get to know more! I also must mention how kick ass and glorious the cover is, as soon as I saw the cover I knew I had to read this book, it’s definitely going to be one of my favourites of this year!
The world building is excellent, and we are introduced to everything in a timely manner, as opposed to dumping loads of information on us right at the start. It’s easy and enjoyable reading and the story feels very authentic. The romantic elements of the story also feel very natural, and it just adds another layer to how terrific this book really is.
If you’re a fantasy fan, this is definitely a series to pick up. The world is so easy to immerse yourself in, and I promise there’s never a dull moment. This book is definitely going to be on my top picks of 2015. It’s well paced and fantastically written, you’re only problem is going to be what to do until Daughter of Winter comes out.
